Edinburgh

It is too difficult to show the entire panoramic of Edinburgh from atop the Sir Walter Scott Monument, after all, it has a 9 X 88 aspect ratio. In my best attempt to do this, I broke the scene up into six separate sections, this being the last one, showing Edinburgh Castle. I do have the entire panoramic available at http://glsmyth.com/Projects/Scotland/Edinburgh/Edinburgh.htm.

The image was made by shooting 44 sets of 3 images, where each set contained an underexposed, overexposed, and properly exposed capture. Each set was put together using Photomatix, which allowed me the choices that resulted in what you see. Someone else could have made completely different choices with the software and created a much different image.
Construction In Edinburgh

While at the top of the Sir Walter Scott Monument in Edinburgh, I looked straight down and watched the construction in progress. I saw workers and pedestrians moving, as well as standing still, and thought it would be interesting to find a way to show this. I took a series of five images within the span of a couple of seconds with the intention of combining them. I felt that HDR would be the most appropriate way to put things together, as it would offer the tone mapping capabilities to me. When I asked Photomatix to put these images together it initially complained, as all of the images were shot with the same exposure information. After assuring the software that this was indeed my intention, it put them together.

I recommend looking at this image in its largest format, as one can much better see the ghosting of the individuals who are walking around the construction area, as well as the multiple locations of portions of the construction equipment, especially the yellow machine in the center.
Unaware

I wrote about my difficulty of remembering names in the entry Aware (look for Aware). That particular image represented the joy of remembering the name of someone I know, and this image represents the difficulty encountered when I know someone, but their name just does not bubble up to my consciousness.

This particular image was made on Konica Infrared film in a pinhole camera that was fitted with a Zone Plate.
We Are Glad You Are Here

There is no way a photographer can pass this building without stopping to grab the image. My memory tells me that this building was in Front Royal, Virginia, but I can find no evidence of it. Since the picture was originally taken about ten years ago, the building may no longer exist. Hopefully, someone will recognize the location and let me know.
Morning, Gredos, Spain

I have written before about my trip to Spain. I rose early truth about enzyte each morning and enjoyed a long walk, taking in the crisp air. This was around sunrise, and when I returned I normally saw long shadows accompanying any objects that stood in the sun’s way.

As the purpose of my visit was to spend plenty of time talking with people, the chairs sitting outside took on the meaning of my purpose, although it was normally my decision to walk while talking. I took a number of pictures of shadows emanating from the chairs, but I felt that this one captured not only the feeling, but the patterns.
Tilghman Shanties

Along with the boats on Tilghman Island, and shanties to accommodate the working boats. The shanties are, needless to say, function over form, but because of that have their own particular charm. Like the boats that outlive their purpose, when shanties outlive their purpose they are abandoned and offered back to nature.

This image was captured using Konica Infrared film.
Three Windows

A number of years ago I had the opportunity to spend quite a bit of time on a farm, photographing anything that I might have felt to be interesting. I took the typical photographs one would normally take, and then I came upon a barn. The barn was very interesting, but the most compelling focus for me was a set of three windows. The more I looked at them, the more questions I had. Why were there three windows in this location? Why are they all set at different heights? Why is the middle one so close to the ground? Why are they so close together?

I never asked these questions because I decided that answers might make the questions less intriguing. Printing this as a Bromoil image helps offer additional mystery, and allows one to either come to their own conclusions, or not.

This image, created by the Pinhole Blender, incorporates church, home, and business. I will allow the viewer to fill in the blanks, if there are any.
Tilghman Island Boats

Boats are often used for pleasure, but also serve as working tools and simple transportation. This is the case with these boats on Tilghman Island, Maryland. And yes, as on Smith Island, when their time of usefulness has passed, they are discarded, as can be seen in the upper right corner of this image.

This is a typical scene on Tilghman Island, where some people still make their living on the water, although that is becoming a more and more difficult task.
Lamps For Sale

A previous entry (Not Open) showed the building, this entry shows one of the building’s windows. Two sad lamps tell the story, along with the discarded Styrofoam cup, old telephone, and No Trespassing sign. Could these lamps actually have been for sale, or were they simply used for illumination while the store’s contents was being removed?
